Best Way to Find the Ideal Apartment Location

Find the right area to look for an apartment can be trying, especially if you are not familiar with the city in question. There are many different factors that have to be taken into consideration and many of these are not necessarily listed in the apartment rental guides and websites, though some of them are. All said, everyone has their own idea of what constitutes an “ideal” location, so there is no universally applicable way to find the ideal location that will work for everyone. Nevertheless, here are some basic tips for finding your ideal location for an apartment.

The first step is to list out your priorities. For one person, having an apartment close to their work or close to a school for their children may be more important than the condition of the neighborhood or the conveniences nearby. For another person, living in a clean, safe neighborhood is much more of a priority than the actual distance to work or school. For others, the priority may be the condition of the roads or commute time, the proximity to park space or a walking/cycling trail, or just about anything else. The first thing you should do when trying to find your ideal area for an apartment is to make a list of the priorities you consider most important and use the list to guide your search.

The depending on your priorities, one helpful tool is Google Maps (maps.google.com). This free online service allows you to map out all the important areas of a community as well as the locations that are most important to you like work and school. It also allows you to see all of the major roads and thoroughfares, so you can determine how easy – or difficult – it will be for you to reach the destinations that you intend to spend a lot of time at. Using Google Maps, you should be able to get a good idea of the general areas in which to look for your ideal apartment.

After you know the general area that works best for you, the next step is to go to the local apartment finders or guides, which are available both online and usually for free in print format. These guides will usually provide a map and show you the listed apartment buildings and complexes in the desired area. It is important to note that many times both the print and online editions of these apartment finders are not complete, since the apartments have to pay for inclusion. This means that there are always some apartments that are not listed in these guides, so when you make your initial visit, look around to see if there are other apartments for rent in the same immediate vicinity.

Once you find the ideal area and the apartments in that area, the next step is to go and physically explore the area and the apartments. This will give you a better idea of the type of neighborhood and the kind of people that live there. Further, you can ask around to see which buildings or complexes have vacancies and which ones are worth exploring in more detail.
